During the late 50s, when George C. Martin Jr. was a student in the Department of Architecture at The Catholic University of America, in Washington, D.C., he designed a number of warehouses for his father, George C. Martin Sr. and uncles who were in the process of developing a plot of land (27 acres) called Industrial City, Inc., in Bladensburg Maryland. At that time they also purchased a six acre site in Edmonston Maryland (about a mile away) from the Daniels brothers (Standard Properties) which would later become Martin Industrial Park.
Upon graduation from college George Jr. joined his father’sconstruction firm where they completed almost 1,000 projects, including 138 Safeway stores, and over 300 government projects. However, when George C. and his brothers jointly engaged in development, they used the far less costly non-union construction company of the brother's called, Martin Brothers Inc. Having been involved in the design of numerous buildings at Industrial City, George Jr. was particularly interested and involved in the design of Martin Industrial Park. The venture researched what users were more inclined to want at the time (loading dock versus drive-in; high versus low ceiling, etc.) to achieve the best speculative development in the area. At that time, most warehouses were custom built for particular users, thereby limiting interest for future use.
Following his graduation from the School of Architecture at The Catholic University of America, George Jr.'s son, George J. Martin, joined the management team and designed and oversaw construction of numerous office additions and improvements to the property. George Jr. and George J. continue to manage the property today.
